Turkey Hunting: Call Softly and Sit Long with Tracy Groves
If you’re going to hunt turkeys on public lands, you’ve got to commit to hunt the turkey on his time, not on your time. Your best tool is patience.
Public land turkeys receive a lot of hunting pressure, and they don’t like it. The average public land turkey hunter will listen for a turkey to gobble, move within 100 yards of that turkey, and as long as a turkey is gobbling, the hunter will keep calling to him. But, when the turkey doesn’t gobble back to his calls, the hunter usually will wait 10 to 15 minutes and then go home.

It starts in the heart" is the slogan of Heartwood Outdoors Outreach Center and its founder Mossy Oak ProStaffer Tracy Grove. It pretty much says it all as I and many others have learned by knowing Tracy and the members of Heartwood Outdoors.
The Outreach Center was a dream, or mission if you will, of Tracy's for many years. The actual center was established June 2012 on 160 acres in Maryland. Tracy wanted an outlet so he could use hunting and the outdoors to reach and help those in need or who just need a pick me up, children and adults.

TRACY GROVES ON WHETHER TURKEY HUNTING’S A BLESSING OR AN AGGRAVATION
When the alarm clock goes off an hour or two before daylight, many of us struggle with fully awakening and climbing out of that warm, comfortable bed. We have to go out in the weather whether it’s rainy, cold, windy, dark or just mild to hunt. We have to start walking and listening for turkeys. If we don’t locate a gobbler to hunt until the middle of the morning or later in the morning, we’ll start thinking about how far we've walked and how unsuccessful we've been and dwelling on those facts.

TRACY GROVES’ 30 DAY OPTION FOR TAKING PUBLIC LAND TOMS
Most turkey hunters start scouting for turkeys a week or two before the season begins, but I begin at least 30-days before the season. I’m looking for the turkeys that are the farthest from the parking lot or any road. Those turkeys are the ones I plan to hunt on opening morning. Very-few turkey hunters today are willing to walk as far as I think you need to walk to take a mature gobbler on the opening day of turkey season. On the opening week of turkey season, I’ll walk many miles before daylight. I don’t have to use a GPS, because I know the woods so well.
